The Seventh-day Adventist Church Has Aids! How's that for a title of a Forum meeting? Isn't this the same Seventh-day Adventist Church whose male members are reported to have a seven to nine year increased life expectancy and whose female members enjoy a similar advantage over non-SDAs? And the Church has AIDS?

Perhaps it's just a catchy title intended to get your. Perhaps it's an exaggeration, an hyperbole, a literary device not unknown among biblical writers and today’s contemporaries.

But let's read on. Dr. Harvey Elder offers this overview of HIV/AIDS epidemics in the United States and worldwide to provide a background for this discussion and suggests that there are implications for the Seventh-day Adventist Church, serious implications. "At present," he contends, "HIV is spreading so rapidly that by the year 2001, just about five years from now, [editor's note], 100,000,000 people will have been infected, over 20,000,000 will have died from AIDS and 3,000,000 - 5,000,000 will have become orphans."

"In countries where the Seventh-day Adventist Church has the most baptisms, this epidemic is exploding. Many young church workers are brands, plucked for the burning, individuals who had high risk behaviors. They near readiness for ordination toward the end of the latency of their HIV infection! For many, ordination and AIDS will occur the same year."

A member of the School of Medicine faculty at Loma Linda University since 1981, Dr. Harvey Elder is also Chief, Infectious Disease Section, Jerry L. Pettis Memorial Veterans Medical Center in Loma Linda, having served in this position since 1977. He's a member of a host of boards and committees related to his area of expertise and has been published widely in scientific and medical journals and books, with nearly forty articles or Chapters. He is a chemistry/mathematics graduate with honors of Andrews University, 1952. He completed his M.D. degree and a M.S. in biochemistry at Loma Linda in 1957.
