The Immorality of Miracles

ABOUT THE TOPIC:

Miracles hold a special fascination! We hear of a spectacular "healing" in some distant locale or a supernatural delivery from imminent danger and our attention is aroused.

Such interests may, to a very large degree, reflect the culture of Adventism which is transmitted from generation to generation through the recounting of mission stories in Sabbath School, the content of our children's papers: Our Little Friend, Insight, etc., and a certain mystique out of which the heroes (or heroines) of Adventism emerged.

The stories are real -- we can all attest to that. But are they true? Have we investigated these unnatural phenomena personally? Are they unnatural or supernatural? We might want to ponder just why these "miracle" stories are published.

Dave Larson proposes to lead us into a serious look at miracles, the purpose they may have served or may now serve in the promotion of God's kingdom. And, as you might infer from the title he has chosen, he will also probe into the question of whether our fascination with and expectation of miracles is moral?

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

David Larson is not a stranger to the San Diego Chapter of the Association of Adventist FORUMS. In May of 1984 he spoke to us on the topic: "Form and Matter In Sexual Love" -- a topic seemingly rather unrelated to this month's presentation.

He claims Nevada as his native state but quickly acknowledges that he was reared in Hawaii and in Northern California. Dr. Larson spent some years as pastor in the Southeastern California Conference and was ordained in 1974. Since that date he has been a faculty member at Lorna Linda University where he now serves as an Associate Professor of Christian Ethics and Director of the Center for Christian Bioethics.

He is a graduate of Pacific Union College (B.A., 1968), the School of Theology at Claremont (D.Min., 1973) and Claremont Graduate School (Ph.D., 1982).

His wife is a commercial artist and illustrator. They have three children, each of whom, Dave contends, is a miracle!
