Speaking Up For Sexuality

"Are We Making a Religion out of Sex?"

That's the question raised by J. Randall Petersen, in the center-fold (pardon the expression) article of the May, 1985 Signs of the Times. "We are bombarded" begins his essay, with sexual statistics, sexual images, sexual urges -- but our world is really just one high-tech step away from the Canaanites or Corinthians."

"In issues of sexuality," he concludes, "our churches have generally not behaved as communities of faith should. We have ignored sex, have quietly ostracized any who fall into sexual sin, and have provided very little support for those encountering temptation."

The preceding paragraphs, although appearing in a Seventh-day Adventist publication, were not written by an SDA nor were they focusing primarily on Adventists. They do, however, create an appropriate backdrop for this month's presentation/discussion.

To help whet our appetites, Alberta Mazat has posed the following questions for our consideration:

-- Are sexuality and spirituality compatible?

-- Does (or should) [editor's note] the church have a philosophy of sexuality?

-- What, if anything, can the church do to be constructive in this area?

Alberta Mazat is the author of two books: That Friday in Eden (1981) and Fullness of Joy (1982); numerous articles and several cassette tapes on human sexuality.

After becoming a registered nurse, LLU, School of Nursing (1942), she also earned a Bachelor's degree in Sociology (1968), and Master's degree in Social Work (1972) from the University of Denver.

This much-in-demand speaker is licensed and/or certificated as a Certified Social Worker, Clinical Social Worker, Marriage and Family Therapist, Sex Educator, Sex Therapist, Fellow in Sex Counseling and Therapy, and as a Registered Nurse.

She holds professional memberships in the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy; American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists; California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists; National Association of Social Workers; and the Sex Information and Education Council of the United States.

Her LLU-University Church responsibilities include serving as an ordained elder, member of the Ad Hoc Committee on Divorce and Remarriage, participant in Pre-marriage Seminars, and a member of the choir.
