Summer meeting well-attended!

On September 8, Sigve Tonstad, MD, PhD, Associate Professor of Religion at Loma Linda University, presented a lecture on Lost Meaning(s) of the Seventh Day, which stems from his 2009 book, The Lost Meaning of the Seventh Day.  He has authored several books, including Saving God’s Reputation.

Dr. Tonstad began his remarks by claiming that Scripture has consistently asserted that the Sabbath of Creation is the model for the Sabbath of Redemption, and continued by saying that God seeks the benefit of all creation through the seventh day.  He posited that from its first mention in Genesis, “the seventh day tells of the importance of human beings to God, and its primary message is not human duty but divine commitment.”

He demonstrated how Scripture presents an unchanging message of Sabbath as Revelation by examining Genesis 2:1-3 (Creation), Isaiah 56:1-8 (Prophecy), and John 5:7-9 (Gospel).  Comparing the Genesis text: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Gen 1:1) to the Johannine one: “In the beginning was the Revealer, and the Revealer was with God, and the Revealer was God” (John 1:1) [paraphrase], Dr. Tonstad argued that the Sabbath is Revelation.

Dr. Tonstad concluded his remarks by arguing that a Sabbath-less world is one of depletion and over-taxation, and a recipe for self-destruction.
