Dr. Reinder Bruinsma received his Ph.D. at the University of London and is currently retired and living in the Netherlands after serving more than forty years in various assignments around the world for the Seventh-day Adventist church, most recently as the interim president of the Belgium-Luxembourg Conference. Throughout his church service, Dr. Bruinsma has been a prolific writer, authoring more than 20 books, hundreds of articles, and a blog. His most recent book, which also serves the basis for his SDAF lecture, focuses on church members who feel "on the margins" due to personal beliefs which are in conflict with stated church policy and/or conventional Adventist interpretations of Biblical teaching. Unsurprisingly, Dr. Bruinsma positions have put him in conflict with more orthodox leaders in the Church. One of the more notable critiques was delivered by Clifford Goldstein, where he questioned Dr. Bruinsma's intellectual honesty and moral integrity for not admitting that his views are fundamentally incompatible with the SDA Church. Goldstein states, "In short, this book confirms what I’ve believed for decades: the Seventh-day Adventist Church would be better off burnt to the ground and rebuilt from scratch than to have an iota of the left-wing’s vision implemented in it."
